I spent this morning wandering around Takayama before catching my train(s) to Beppu. This town is really quite charming - I think my favorite in Japan so far! The old part of the city is composed of several preserved buildings, all constructed of wood. There are signs everywhere forbidding smoking for fear that it will set the city ablaze!
